This guide explains why that matters, what testing checks, and how to tell real verification from marketing theater.

“Tested” is not the same as “third-party tested”
A brand can test its own product in its own facility and call it “lab tested.” That is not nothing, but it has an obvious conflict of interest: the company grading its own homework. Third-party testing means an independent laboratory with no stake in the outcome ran the analysis. That independence is the whole point. When you see a result from an outside lab, you are seeing a number the brand did not control.
The gold-standard signal is accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for the competence of testing laboratories. A lab accredited to that standard has demonstrated, to an outside body, that its methods and results are reliable.
What testing actually checks
For a hemp or cannabinoid product, a complete lab analysis answers two separate questions.
Is it what it says it is? (Potency) The cannabinoid panel confirms how much CBD, CBG, delta-9 THC, and other compounds are present. This is how you know a “30 mg per dropper” claim is real and that the delta-9 THC sits within the 0.3% legal limit, or is non-detect if you are avoiding THC.
Is it safe? (Contaminants) This is the part marketing rarely mentions. A full analysis screens for:
- Pesticides
- Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury)
- Residual solvents left over from extraction
- Microbials (bacteria, mold)
- Mycotoxins (mold toxins)
A product can be perfectly potent and still fail one of these safety panels. That is exactly why potency-only testing is not enough.
Why it matters more for hemp than for almost anything else
Hemp is a known bioaccumulator, meaning the plant draws up substances from the soil it grows in, including heavy metals.
